Beware of “MAGICAL” space heaters

Before you purchase any space heaters, please beware of scams, misrepresentations and fraudulent offers. You’ll also want to consider how space heaters can impact your electric bills.

A current promotional campaign touts a heating technology that can save you 50 percent on your heating bills. The cost of the unit is over $400. It tells you to turn your furnace way back to 50 degrees and then carry the heater with you from room to room since space heaters can only heat a small space. This approach isn’t practical for most households long-term. Most people do not stick with the cold house, warm room scenario very long. The heater is a regular 1,500 watt unit, which is similar to one that you can purchase for $50 at other stores, and that heats the same as the expensive model.

Most space heaters use between 600 and 1,500 watts of electricity. If, for example, the electric rate is 10 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), the additional cost would add up to $108 in just one month for a homeowner using a space heater eight hours a day, five days a week.

To save on your heating costs, it makes more sense to:

  • Add caulk and weather stripping around doors and windows
  • Add insulation to attics and exposed walls
  • Clean or replace furnace filters
  • Move furniture or obstacles from heat registers
  • Insulate duct work
  • Close blinds or curtains at night
