PEV’s to create new loads, challenges and opportunities

According to a national electrical transmission group, plug-in-vehicles (PEVs) could create a significant new electrical load over the next decade, posing a challenge to the North American electric grid.

The report estimates 1 million PEVs could be deployed over the next five to 10 years, which would add thousands of megawatts of load to the electrical system.

The report projected the impact of PEV loads on wholesale electricity prices to range from no impact to an increase of up to 10 percent, depending on the region, available resources and amount of load in relation to peak usage.

Early sales of PEVs are expected to be clustered in large urban areas on the West Coast and in the Northeast.
